Square is a device and app that allows your iPad to act as a cash register, credit card reader, receipt generator and customer database that plugs into your audio jack. From there, you can swipe credit cards for payment. It’s a simple idea. iPhones have been using the system for a while. Today, version 2 is out and it works with your iPad.
The company will send you its free credit card reader and claims you can “accept credit cards on your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch with no contract, monthly fees or merchant account required. Every user receives a free Square credit card reader in the mail. Within minutes of downloading the app, you’re ready to take payments.”
You can take Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Discover. The company web page states there is a 2.75% fee for each swipe for all credit cards and no monthly fees or contracts. The customer can “sign” the screen and a receipt can be sent by email.
Square is an interesting approach to the problem of taking credit cards on the go.
