The United States Federal Aviation Administration has authorized some commercial and charter airlines to replace the bulky 40 pound paper manuals used by pilots with – an iPad.

American Airlines has already began testing the device and expects to reduce its annual fuel bill by about 1.2 million dollars as a result of the reduced weight.

NPR, CNN and other news sources previously reported on this. Pilots began using them over a year ago to recreate the horizon and as an airspeed indicator.

Now, when the announcement is made to for you to turn off portable electronic devices, the pilots may be firing up their iPads.
